Pour quoi frog?

Why frogs? Well, why not. These frogs are for Darcy, who has been in isolation in The Sydney Children's Hospital. If you want to follow Darcy's progress check out the journal updates here: www.caringbridge.org/visit/darcygilmour10/journal

If you want to make a frog you can find instructions at: http://www.savethefrogs.com/teachers/images/Origami-Jumping-Frog.pdf .

If frogs are beyond you, you can also give blood. Details of how available from the Australian Red Cross Blood Service.

Frogs on work experience

A group of frog students are having a work experience placement in tropical north Queensland.  They are studying the great art of conference management.

They start with the less glamourous side - satchel packing.

On to the fun stuff later.

Breakfast at Tiffanys

OK - so technically that's a lie.
Not at Tiffanys at all (she lives near Bathurst and that's too far to go for brakfast).
Audrey Hepburn notably absent.
But that would be truffled scrambled egg on that there plate.

Yum.

New frog, new egg

The new frog stumbles across a little something...

It's an egg!

A new egg!

Yum.

Yum. Yum.

(Congratulations to FaceChook on her first egg.  We did not let new frog eat it.)

A tenuous connection with frogs

And so it came to pass that the author of this blogpost was watching QI and did become aware of the truly disgusting properties of the hagfish.

She therefore did come to contemplate dedicating the entire post to the Hagfish.  But then discovered that it shared a tenuous connection with frogs, thus justifying the presence of this post.

For those who don't (can't?) follow links, here's a pic:
Hairy and self-destructive. Ish.

Makes my day.

A truffle uncool? I think not.

The frog food critics are back.
And they've got one thing on their mind. Or tongues. Or something.
And that's truffles!

Those blogees who live in and around the Canberra region and who frequent the Farmers' Market at EPIC will know that this year has been a fantastic year for the delicacy that is truffle.

And this abundance has meant that it has had a pretty good work out in a range of different culinary treats including:
Scrambled eggs
Pasta
Creme Brulee
Butter
Icecream
Macarons.

The frog food critics have heard that these culinary adventures have been going down and have demanded they be included in the tasting. Reluctantly, the cooks acquiesce.

The frogs get over their chiding and get on with reviewing ...

 the cheese...

...and...

... the chicken.

Happiness abounds!

(PS - this post was written with a mental soundtrack  - Martha and the Muffins of course. Even though truffles are NOT a trifle uncool.)

Origin of the species?

Some of you may well be thinking that the origin of the species would involve a beagle...

and a voyage.

But you'd be wrong.

Our kind of species is the origami frog.

Which has its origins in Japan.

And this is what happens when Japanese characters and Origami Frogs get together.

With thanks to Claire Irvine for lettering and frog construction.

Paws for thought (3)

Did I say cupcakes make unattractive birds and beasties cool?

Well think what they can do for a species that is already supremely good looking.
What's not to love?

Warning

Run.  Run away now.  Big, dangerous animal approaching.

Damn.  You are a frog.

Hop.  Hop away now.  Big, dangerous animal approaching.

Paws for thought (2)

Turns out that all sorts of birds and beasts can be rendered cute by the addition of a cupcake.

Remember this dude?

Not particularly attractive bird + cupcake

Cute!

Turkey is back on the menu.

Paws for thought

On Monday this week it was cupcake day.

The frogs admire the fine work of the RSPCA (Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Amphibians) but they are even more impressed with the work of Laura, queen of cupcakes.

Cute.

And tasty!

International frogs

Our travelling frog found this chap lurking in Singapore.  It would seem the combination of age and elements is not kind to frogs.

However frog did admire his air of serenity and being at one with nature.

The lemurs also wish it to be known...

Baboons? Hah.  As if they are cool.

The lemurs also wish it to be known that they look pretty darn fine in paper too.

 Source? here.

Baboons demand right of reply

The baboons would like it known that they resent the slur cast by Frog.
They assert their right to exist and be modelled in stone or paper.

This blog would like it known that it finds the origami skills of Beth Johnson - creator of these cool dudes - to be somewhat awesome. Check it out here.

A long lost relative?

When looking for branches on the family tree, frog found himself in the British Museum, where he met this chap.

A Late Predynastic - early First Dynasty, about 3100 BC frog, carved from andesite.  At the beginning of the First Dynasty a few large sculptures of animals were produced, the frog and baboon being popular subjects.
Frog could understand the popularity of the frog as a sculptural subject, but had no idea why anyone would bother with a baboon.

Enough with the cats

Perhaps I don't get out enough.
But honestly, I had no idea this thing existed.

Meet the frogdog.

Star Wars tragics probably already have.

More catfrog

Regular readers will know we like to do our research.

There appears to be some kind of synergy between cats and frogs.

Which is perhaps why the ABC suggests dressing your cat up as a frog.

You've got to wonder if someone reads this stuff before it gets published.

Quotable quotes include:
"Playing dress ups is great fun. So why not let your cat in on the action?"
and
"You could make this frog hat for your cat and have your own fashion parade. If your moggy won't play along, it could work on your teddy bear or little sister instead!"

The final artwork is a little blurry but I reckon that's a Birman attempting to dislodge a frog hat and gloves.

Not happy I think.

You fill up my census

The new frog gets into the spirit of census.

Which, in this house, involves red duck curry and a glass of champagne.

And, despite the influence of the champers, some pretty reliable answers.

Catfrog

The new frog introduces herself to the cat.

The cat is not impressed.
